SUMMARY:Brandon Santini @ the Linda
DESCRIPTION:There are many different opinions as to what the future of the blues harmonica will be. International touring vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini is undeniably a worthy player to keep an eye on as the latest surge of young blues artists leave their footprint in blues history. His name is worthy of conversations that include James Cotton\, Kim Wilson\, Dennis Gruenling\, Charlie Musselwhite and other frontline harmonica players by combining his love and respect for traditional blues with a present\, colorful style of playing that is often compared to James Cotton or Paul Butterfield. Raised in the Piedmont region of North Carolina\, Santini purchased his first harmonica in 1997 at the age of fifteen when his mother took him to the local music store upon his request. He founded the Blues Music Award-nominated band Delta Highway in 2003 and relocated to Memphis where he absorbed the sounds and culture of the Delta and North Mississippi Hill Country\, honing his craft night after night\, sweating it out in local Beale Street clubs just like Robert Johnson\, Muddy Waters\, and B.B. King did decades before him. Now playing over 100 shows per year throughout the world\, Santini has garnered five Blues Music Award nominations\, festival headlining slots and even performing on stage with the likes of Buddy Guy and Gary Clark\, Jr. \n\n\n\nBrandon Santini’s latest release\, The Longshot\, from the American Showplace Music label takes listeners on a slight detour from the traditional blues highway he has logged many miles on. One may not be surprised that the 36 year old vocalist and harmonica player is influenced and inspired by legendary rock artists such as The Rolling Stones\, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers\, The Allman Brothers Band and Creedence Clearwater Revival just as much as Little Walter\, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. From the ferocious opener\, “Don’t Come Around Here” to the embattled acoustic American driven\, “Broken Bones\,” Santini ties his blues and rock influences together to deliver an energetic album of introspective heartbreak and lament.

SUMMARY:Mississippi John Hurt Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:No blues singer ever presented a more gentle\, genial image than Mississippi John Hurt – a guitarist with an extraordinarily lyrical and refined fingerpicking style\, he also sang with a warmth unique in the field of blues. His gospel influence gave it a depth and reflective quality unusual in the field. (AllMusic). Hurt (July 3\, 1893 – November 2\, 1966) might have lived and died in obscurity\, if it hadn’t been for the folk music revival of the late ’50s and early ’60s. A new generation of listeners and scholars suddenly expressed a deep interest in the music of America’s hinterlands\, not only in listening to it but finding and preserving it. A scholar named Tom Hoskins discovered that Mississippi John Hurt\, who hadn’t been heard from musically in over 35 years\, was alive and living in Avalon\, MS\, and sought him out\, following the trail laid down in Hurt’s song “Avalon Blues.” Their meeting was a fateful one; Hurt was in his 70s\, and weary from a lifetime of backbreaking labor for pitifully small amounts of money\, but his musical ability was intact\, and he bore no ill-will against anyone who wanted to hear his music. \n\n\n\nHurt’s legacy at Caffe Lena dates to July 7-10\, 1966. His mark on Saratoga Springs parallels his influence throughout the blues world. Countless guitar players started out by listening to and studying the fingerpicking style of John Hurt. This fundraiser features four duos playing the music by and inspired by Mississippi John Hurt. Monies raised will benefit the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation\, established by Hurt’s granddaughter\, Mary Frances Hurt. The Mississippi John Hurt Foundation is a non-profit organization devoted primarily to preserving the musical legacy and history of Mississippi John Hurt\, while providing musical and educational opportunities to disadvantaged youth. Through the music of John Hurt\, children and adult music fans alike are exposed to the rich oral\, musical\, and literary traditions of the Mississippi Delta and surrounding areas. Funds raised will also support a film\, currently in production\, about his life and legacy. \n\n\n\nPerformers for this extraordinary evening include the Piedmont Bluz Duo of Valerie and Benedict Turner\, Annie & Jonny Rosen of Annie and the Hedonists\, Erin Harpe & Jim Countryman and Mark Tolstrup & Jill Burnham of Mark & Jill. Truly a historic night of musical excellence and food for the soul.

SUMMARY:Carolyn Wonderland @ Stationery Factory
DESCRIPTION:$20 – 25. Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. She hits the stage with an unmatched presence\, a true legend in her time. \n\n\n\nShe’d grown up the child of a singer in a band and began playing her mother’s vintage Martin guitar when other girls were dressing dolls. She’d gone from being the teenage toast of her hometown Houston to sleeping in her van in Austin amid heaps of critical acclaim for excellent recordings. \n\n\n\nAlong with the guitar and the multitude of other instruments she learned to play – trumpet\, accordion\, piano\, mandolin\, lap steel – Wonderland’s ability to whistle remains most unusual. Whistling is a uniquely vocal art seldom invoked in modern music\, yet it’s among the most spectacular talents the human voice possesses. \n\n\n\nWe are excited to have the Katie Henry Band opening!

SUMMARY:Seth Rosenbloom @ Stationery Factory
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: $20 – 25 \n\n\n\nAfter spending a few years as an active sideman and in demand clinician\, Rosenbloom stepped into the spotlight with the release of his self-titled EP in September 2017. He supported the recording with a string of tour dates up and down the East Coast\, demonstrating at each stop his clear commitment to his craft and his ability to enthrall his audiences with his verve and versatility. \n\n\n\nRosenbloom has further expanded his reputation by spending much of this year on the road as well\, introducing himself to his newly enthusiastic audiences. Whether demonstrating his dazzling guitar riffs and stinging vibrato\, or emoting with his soaring and sultry vocals\, he brings a distinctive power and personality to each of his performances. Now\, with the release of Keep On Turning\, he underscores that ability to add several specific hues to the blues.

SUMMARY:Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton and Dennis Lichtman
DESCRIPTION:Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton and Dennis Lichtman bring African-American folk and blues to Spencertown Academy. Paxton and Lichtman’s mutual love of the history\, stories\, and significance behind the music they play is apparent as they romp through an energetic and engaging set of acoustic blues\, ragtime\, Tin Pan Alley pop songs\, 1920s jazz\, twin fiddle hoe-downs\, and original songs and compositions. \n\n\n\nTickets: Academy members: $25\, General Admission: $30 \n\n\n\nJerron “Blind Boy” Paxton and Dennis Lichtman are both world-renowned multi-instrumentalists and vocalists whose musical friendship has grown organically in New York City for more than a decade. Their formal partnership began with a video shoot\, Just Cross the River From Queens\, at the Louis Armstrong House Museum in 2017. Paxton and Lichtman recently released their first full-length recording\, simply titled Jerron Paxton & Dennis Lichtman. \n\n\n\nJerron Paxton plays black folk music from nearly all the idioms that entails. From the Jazz of stride piano and banjo from New Orleans to New York to the deepest of the blues played on guitar and harmonica of which he has been a noted figure since his teenage years\, from the rural music that reaches the beginnings of black arrival in America played on fiddle\, banjo\, and bones to ragtime and other turn of the century music that gives the full breadth of black music before World War Two in a package that doesn’t lecture\, but invites you to enjoy that music as it was given to him. Mr. Paxton has been known to give his audiences a sense of being transported not to a time\, but a state of mind and understanding that allows audiences to enjoy black folk music and have it become a part of them as has been the American experience from the beginning. \n\n\n\nDennis Lichtman is a world-traveling bandleader who is best known for leading the famed trad-jazz jam sessions at Mona’s Bar in New York City since 2007\, and which was described in the Wall Street Journal as “ground zero for an emerging late-night scene of young traditional jazz and swing players.” He is a masterful multi-instrumentalist (clarinet\, mandolin\, violin\, and more) who has toured and recorded with The Lovestruck Balladeers\, Pokey LaFarge\, Ghost Train Orchestra\, Jim Kweskin\, and his own projects: The Brain Cloud\, Mona’s Hot Four\, and has a forthcoming original music album titled Secret Workshop.

SUMMARY:Junior Watson + Dean Shot @ The Linda
DESCRIPTION:Junior Watson + Dean Shot + Live Broadcast of Live at The Linda\nYou can be in the live studio audience for this outstanding show featuring blues legends\, Junior Watson and Dean Shot!\nWAMC’s LIVE AT THE LINDA\, hosted by Peter Hughes\, broadcasts live on WAMC – Northeast Public Radio from our performing arts studio – “The Linda” on the last Sunday of every month. \nWith nearly forty years of experience\, Junior Watson has reached cult status. Junior has done what all great artists have done: melting diverse styles to create a style all his own. With influences as diverse as Tiny Grimes\, Oscar Moore\, Bill Jennings\, Rene Hall\, Robert Jr. Lockwood\, Jimmy Rogers\, Eddie Taylor\, Guitar Slim\, Earl Hooker and others he has truly created one of the most unique and original guitar voices to come along in years. Besides his mastery of blues and swing he often adds his own cartoon-like twist to everything he plays. You’ll never know what he will do and when asked he doesn’t know himself. His energy and playing gives you a feeling of reckless abandonment. As he was once quoted “like a train off the tracks”. \nVocal and guitar stylist Dean Shot is and has been for many years one of the East Coast’s Premiere authentic blues artists. Born and raised in West Orange\, NJ. Dean’s mother played piano around the house\, and performed in summer stock plays as a youth. The influence of his mother singing and playing piano must have stuck with Dean as an infant\, he was always drawn to music. In his teens\, Dean took up guitar and began pursuing all the blues music he could find to listen to. \n$25 – $30 General Admission  < CRBN Members Save! Not a Member? Join Today! \nDOORS OPEN 7:30
