SUMMARY:John Primer & The Real Deal Blues Band
DESCRIPTION:As the title of his critically acclaimed Atlantic Record CD suggests\, Grammy Award and Handy Award Nominee\, John Primer is truly “The Real Deal.” At eight years old\, John borrowed his first guitar and started to strum. With the sounds of Jimmy Reed\, Muddy Waters\, Little Milton\, Elmore James\, B.B. & Albert King reverberating through his Grandmother Laura Nell’s tube radio\, John was instantly hooked. He was fascinated with Blues music and set forth on a life long path of becoming a musical force. Early inspiration came from his family steeped in spiritual\, gospel\, and church\, and went on to play at house parties and fish frys in and around his hometown of Camden\, Mississippi. \n\n\n\nAt the age of eighteen\, feeling restless and in search of further audiences\, John followed the path of his mentors and migrated to Chicago in the fall of 1963. He quickly found work in the era when modern Electric Blues and the West and South Sides sounds were first taking shape. Forming his first band The Maintainers in 1964\, John and his old Harmony guitar rocked such West Side clubs as The Place\, The Bow Tie\, and Lover’s Lounge. By 1968 John had left The Maintainers when the opportunity arouse to front the Soul and R&B group The Brotherhood. Jamming late into the night and practicing by day\, John was forming his own unique style and expanding his repertoire. John’s success would lead him in 1974 to replace John Watkins in the house band at the world famous Theresa’s Lounge on the South Side. Over the course of the next five years\, John would play with such originators as Sammy Lawhorn\, Junior Wells\, Buddy Guy\, Smokey Smothers\, Lonnie Brooks\, and a host of other innovators sculpting the sound of the Chicago Blues scene. \n\n\n\nIt was during this part in John’s career that quite a few people were taking note of this outstanding performer. In 1979\, master songwriter and bassist Willie Dixon persuaded him to join his band The Chicago All Stars. Traveling through the US\, Mexico and Europe\, John developed his skills as a rhythm guitarist\, a lead slide player\, and a powerful singer. Another Blues master who believed in John Primer was none other than the “Hoochie Coochie Man” himself\, Muddy Waters. Muddy recruited John not only as a guitarist\, but also as an opening act. As he did with so many other great musicians\, Muddy served as a father to John\, instilling in him an unrelenting passion for the music that gave birth to Rock and Roll. John stayed loyal to Muddy until his untimely death in 1983. \n\n\n\nFresh off the heels of his success with the Muddy Waters Band\, John signed on with the legendary Magic Slim. For the next fourteen years\, he toured with Magic Slim & The Teardrops\, bringing tight\, house rocking sounds to every corner of the planet. But John’s days as a sideman were numbered\, and in 1995 the veteran Blues man released his major label debut “The Real Deal”. He has since toured extensively in support of his ten solo albums to date. With John Primer’s strong traditionalist Blues phrasing and lightning fast slide technique\, few artists can match him. A master storyteller and songwriter\, his catalog of songs is endless and his sound is unforgettable. John Primer & The Real Deal Blues Band continues to electrify audiences at clubs and festivals and remain a driving force in the world of Blues music today.

DESCRIPTION:Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street\, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot\, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk\, a car Grimaldi still owns today\, and was also intended as a tribute to his friend\, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. “…Hound Dog started playing\, hitting notes that sent chills up and down my spine. He was versatile and powerful and would play rhythm as well as leads. I left there knowing what I wanted to do. I had to play slide guitar.” \n\n\n\nJoining Studebaker is Rick Kreher\, an original part of Studebaker John & The Hawks. He was also a guitarist for Muddy Waters and is the guitarist for Mud Morganfield.

SUMMARY:Misty Blues: Odetta Tribute
DESCRIPTION:A passion project that has been brewing since the mid-1990s for the lead singer of Misty Blues\, Gina Coleman\, whose encounter with the legendary Odetta at the Bottomline club in New York City as a guest of Arlo Guthrie left a powerful impression and was a seminal moment in her career. This inspiration came full circle in the form of a live recorded album in May of 2023. The switch to acoustic instrumentation and performing folk standards was a switch for the band\, but pushing to the edges of the blues genre is nothing new for the band. Ultimately\, Gina has expressed on multiple occasions that African-American folk music is most certainly blues in her book. This performance of their tribute album comes on the heels of Misty Blues’ most recent original album “Outside the Lines.” Gina and Misty Blues have not skipped a beat\, not even during the pandemic\, when they remarkably released three albums. A Global Blues Radio review once wrote: “The key to their sound is depth\, coupled with bravado and grace. If you like roots music with deep ties to the blues\, you will love this band!” \n\n\n\nMISTY BLUES BIO: \n\n\n\n2019 International Blues Challenge finalist\, Misty Blues\, is led by lead singer/band founder Gina Coleman. The band is based out of Berkshire County\, Massachusetts playing original and traditional blues with hints of jazz\, soul\, funk and tent revival gospel since 1999. The band has recorded with Eric Gales\, Charles Neville and Joe Louis Walker\, and opened for contemporary blues artists like Tab Benoit\, James Montgomery\, John Primer\, Roomful Of Blues\, Albert Cummings and Michael Powers. Misty Blues performs extensively throughout New England and has toured the continental U.S. and Canada. The band has been nominated for a few Independent Blues Music Awards and their original recordings have broad international airplay. \n\n\n\nIn the summer of 1999 Gina Coleman was performing in the Williamstown Theatre Festival production of A Raisin In The Sun. That production featured the acting of Ruben Santiago Hudson\, Viola Davis\, Kimberly Elise and Gloria Foster. Coleman was cast as a gospel singer. Nearing the end of the show’s run\, Ruben Santiago Hudson gave Coleman a cd collection entitled Men Are Like Streetcars. He told her that her voice was well suited for the blues and urged her to take that next musical direction. Coleman heeded his advance\, and after 24 years\, Misty Blues has stood the test of time.

A graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, Gabe’s honors include an invitation to support ZZ Top at the Key West Amphitheater; he was a Blues Music Award nominee in the Best New Emerging Artist Album category; and in March The Gabe Stillman Band was selected as the Best Blues Band by the 3rd Annual Central PA Music Awards.

DESCRIPTION:Davis uses a blend of roots\, blues\, folk\, rock\, rap\, spoken word\, and world music to comment on\, and address\, the frustrations of social injustice\, touching on historical events\, and common life struggles. He sings and plays 6 and 12-string guitar\, harmonica\, 5 and 6-string banjo\, and the didgeridoo. He has played the four corners of the world\, with tours taking him from the equator to the Arctic Circle. \n\n\n\nHis parallel careers—as a musician\, author\, music teacher\, and film\, television\, and Broadway actor—mark him as a renaissance man\, yet the blues remain his first and greatest love. Growing up in a family of artists (his parents were Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis)\, he fell under the spell of Blind Willie McTell and Fats Waller at an early age. \n\n\n\nDavis’s one-­man play\, The Adventures of Fishy Waters: In Bed With the Blues\, premiered Off-­Broadway in the 90s and has since been released as a double CD. He went on to star Off-­Broadway as the legendary Robert Johnson in Robert Johnson: Trick The Devil\, winning the Blues Foundation’s “Keeping the Blues Alive” award. He followed the footsteps of another blues legend when he joined the Broadway production of Finian’s Rainbow\, playing the part originally done in 1947 by Sonny Terry. Along the way\, he cut nine acclaimed albums for the Red House label and four for his own label\, Smokeydoke Records; and was nominated for nearly a dozen Blues Awards. \n\n\n\nWhen asked about his experience as a performer\, Davis replied\, “There is no tale so tall that I cannot tell it\, nor song so sweet that I cannot sing it.”

DESCRIPTION:There are many different opinions as to what the future of the blues harmonica will be. International touring vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini is undeniably a worthy player to keep an eye on as the latest surge of young blues artists leave their footprint in blues history. His name is worthy of conversations that include James Cotton\, Kim Wilson\, Dennis Gruenling\, Charlie Musselwhite and other frontline harmonica players by combining his love and respect for traditional blues with a present\, colorful style of playing that is often compared to James Cotton or Paul Butterfield. Raised in the Piedmont region of North Carolina\, Santini purchased his first harmonica in 1997 at the age of fifteen when his mother took him to the local music store upon his request. He founded the Blues Music Award-nominated band Delta Highway in 2003 and relocated to Memphis where he absorbed the sounds and culture of the Delta and North Mississippi Hill Country\, honing his craft night after night\, sweating it out in local Beale Street clubs just like Robert Johnson\, Muddy Waters\, and B.B. King did decades before him. Now playing over 100 shows per year throughout the world\, Santini has garnered five Blues Music Award nominations\, festival headlining slots and even performing on stage with the likes of Buddy Guy and Gary Clark\, Jr. \n\n\n\nBrandon Santini’s latest release\, The Longshot\, from the American Showplace Music label takes listeners on a slight detour from the traditional blues highway he has logged many miles on. One may not be surprised that the 36 year old vocalist and harmonica player is influenced and inspired by legendary rock artists such as The Rolling Stones\, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers\, The Allman Brothers Band and Creedence Clearwater Revival just as much as Little Walter\, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. From the ferocious opener\, “Don’t Come Around Here” to the embattled acoustic American driven\, “Broken Bones\,” Santini ties his blues and rock influences together to deliver an energetic album of introspective heartbreak and lament.
